What is a micro influencer?

Cameron Blackwood

A micro influencer is a creator with a niche audience that still answers DMs. Brands hire them for trust and a specific content style, not for celebrity reach. Follower bands vary by niche. Treat the number as a starting filter, then watch the posts.

This page is the definition. If you already know you want names, use how to find micro influencers or the free influencer search tool.

A working definition

For most TikTok and Instagram campaigns, "micro" means:

  • They already post the kind of content you want (easy-run vlogs, unboxings, tutorials, not a one-off dance trend).
  • People watch those posts. Views are in the same order of magnitude as followers, or higher.
  • They are still small enough to reply to a specific first message.

Skip "how to become a micro-influencer." That searcher wants growth tips. This page is for people who will hire or gift someone.

Follower ranges (they are not official)

There is no platform badge. Agencies and blogs disagree. This site uses the same bands as how much to pay:

LabelTypical followers on the platform you are buyingWhat you are usually buying
NanoUnder 10kCheap tests, gifting, very narrow niches
MicroAbout 10k to 100kOne video or a small set, still a real reply rate
Mid-tierAbout 100k to 500kBroader reach, slower inbox, higher fees
Macro / celebrity500k+Awareness. Rarely the first hire for a solo founder

Some glossaries cap micro at 50k. Some start it at 1k. If a quote or a tool uses a different cutoff, ask which one. The useful check is still the last ten posts, not the label.

Related terms you will see in the same SERP: nano influencer, macro influencer, and micro influencer marketing. Nano is smaller and often gift-only. Macro is a different budget. Micro influencer marketing is the program: brief, shortlist, fee or gift, then a post or UGC files.

What they are not

Not a UGC-only vendor by default. A UGC creator can have almost no following. You pay for files you run as ads. An influencer post uses their audience. Many micros do both. Say which one you want in the brief. The split: UGC vs influencers.

Not a guaranteed conversion machine. A 25k fitness account can sell a supplement and flop on a SaaS tool. Fit beats follower count.

Not a database row. A handle is a candidate. Vet the public profile before you talk money.

Why brands use micros

You can usually get a reply, a real product shot, and a fee you can explain. Mid-tier and macro accounts often need a manager, a longer contract, and a rate that only makes sense if you need mass reach.

Micros also sit in a niche. An 18k meal-prep creator is a better 10K-shoe test than a 400k lifestyle account that has never posted a run.

The trade: one micro will not replace a media plan. Most first campaigns buy a handful of videos, not one famous face.

How to tell if a "micro" is usable

From a public TikTok or Instagram profile, plus one username analysis:

  1. Fit. Do recent posts look like the deliverable you want?
  2. Delivery. Are recent views in the ballpark of the follower count, or dead?
  3. Comments. Real questions, or emoji spam?
  4. Activity. Have they posted lately?
  5. Safety. Would you put your logo on the last dozen posts?

You cannot see audience country or a fake-follower score from a public scrape. If geo is a hard constraint, ask for an Insights screenshot after they say they are interested.

Examples (the shape, not a celebrity list)

Useful micro examples look like this:

  • A 22k TikTok runner who posts easy-run vlogs and race-week routines.
  • A 40k Instagram skincare account whose last Reels are routine breakdowns, not haul dumps.
  • A 12k SaaS or productivity creator whose comments are other operators asking for the stack.

A 90k account that only posts trending audio and never shows a product is a weak "micro influencer" hire, even if the follower number fits the table.

What to do next

Write a short discovery brief: product, audience, creator style, deliverable, constraints. Then find names or run Creator Discovery Agent. Free is one search a month.

After you have a shortlist: vet, contact, and sanity-check the fee. If you need to prove the buy later, measure the campaign before you ship product. First campaign with no agency: influencer marketing for small business or influencer marketing for your startup.
